Building power for working people

How Food Delivery Apps Are Trying to Kill a Worker Uprising

DoorDash and Grubhub are lobbying to prevent a raise in minimum wage for food delivery workers. But Los Deliveristas are fighting back.

Delivery workers in New York City made history when they won a $24/hour minimum wage. It was supposed to go into effect in January, 2023. Until, it didn’t.

Food delivery apps like DoorDash and Grubhub ran a shady, backroom campaign to delay and water down the law.

But Los Deliveristas are fighting back.

There are roughly 65,000 app-based delivery workers in NYC, making it the largest delivery workforce anywhere in the country.

Gig economy expert Andrew Wolf Taking found that app-based food delivery couriers made on average $12.21 an hour, with tips.

Right now, these workers are on the front lines of a revolution for the gig economy.
