Meat prices are skyrocketing in grocery stores across the country. As consumers pay premiums for beef, the cattle ranchers who actually raise the cows are struggling to turn a profit.
So where’s the money going?
Media reports have blamed price hikes in meat on inflation, the pandemic and worker shortages. But meatpacking giants Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS and National Beef are making record profits while shoppers, farmers and meatpacking workers suffer.
The Big Four meatpackers control more than 80 percent of the cattle industry. They make as much as $1,000 per head of cattle — 20x the typical price — while paying farmers poorly.
Now, Ccttle ranchers are speaking out against the corporations controlling their industry and are urging the Biden administration to break up the Big Four meatpackers to save the industry.
