Building power for working people

Amy’s Kitchen Workers Forced to Wrap 10+ Burritos a Minute Are Unionizing

The family company made millions on progressive branding, but their labor practices are anything but progressive.

Amy’s Kitchen projects an image of progressive values and cruelty-free food. But the workers we spoke with are subject to on-the-job injuries and company neglect.

The California-based food company makes frozen vegan and vegetarian meals. Predominantly Latina workers are tasked with rolling 10 burritos a minute. The repetitive nature causes inflammation, pain, and stress.

Some workers reported sleepless nights due to their pain. Others lost motion of their hands for multiple days after working on the line. OSHA deemed 8 separate labor violations, committed in Amy’s California facilities, as “serious” in the past 5 years.

Now they’re unionizing with Teamsters and facing stiff opposition from Amy’s management. The company held anti-union meetings and threatened to shut down or sell if their workers voted to unionize.
